    "Notice that these specimen are approximately 350 million years old"

    - label in the packet of ammonite slices-

I bought some cut and polished ammonite slices from a friend. I had never seen this kind of ammonite slices before, so I was stunned and exited to see the colours and shapes in these. Here is an example of real ammonite.

I wanted to try imitating some of that in caning with polymer clay. The center one is unreal, the two slices around it were used as colour reference.

Here is one faux ammonite slice before baking.

9th of July update

I found these fossils at a market in a small small village (probably less than 1000 people living) near our summer cottage. Its very rare to find any fossils in Finland, so you bet I was surprised to find this much of them.

There is an ammonite slice and some teeth and various shells etc. I have not jet really had time to study them and guess what they are, but they definitely are old and "stone" not bone.

Detail picture of the dark ammonite slice. The brown parts are in same level as the dark: its glass smooth. It just has some translucent stone in between the dark lines. The dark lines seem to be hematite- stone to me, but I don't know if that is possible. At least that looks exactly the same to my non geologist eyes.

I will update this page after I have made some faux copies of these. Lets see how Alley Putty REALLY works for detail molds :)

Okay. Lesson learned the hard way: Alley Goop sticks to stones that have iron on them. Both of the stones have some rusting in them, so it seems Alley Goop is not the best molding material for this type of fossils.

And yes, I was able to save my precious trilobite. But the toothbrush I used to clean it is complately lost.

The "white" fossils molded very very nicely with Alley goop. One broke because I was bit hasty. How ever it was fragile all along, so its not the fault of alley goop. I especially love the mold on top middle. That really took ALL the detales there were to pick.

Two molded ammonites pre baking and antiquin with paint and the real one in the center.

Before curing;

Molded shell and fossil shell. The real one is on the right.

Real trilobite in a stone and two faux ones made with the mold. I REALLY think these will look real after baking and antiquing !

The saga will continue. Keep watching this space...
